Baruch, 10, came to Neve Michael along with his older brother and sister following their mother’s death. The social services had determined that Baruch’s father was incapable of raising the three kids. Baruch currently attends the Neve Michael elementary school and lives in a family unit with his counselor.

My name is Diana Yosipov. I am almost 13 years old. I celebrated my bat-mitzvah last year at Neve Michael with the other girls. Now I live in a group with 10 other girls my age. I live at Neve Michael because my parents cannot care for me. My younger brother lives here too. I miss my parents very much, but the judges have decided that we cannot live at home.

Sponsor: Monty and Claudia Baker Auckland

My name is Or Chavusha. I am 11 years old. My parents fought constantly and then got divorced last year. Neither of my parents could take care of me and my brothers and sisters, so we came to live at Neve Michael. It is very hard for me to grow up without my parents. Living at the family unit is like having a real family.

My name is Mintamer Gesesa. I am 17 years old. I immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia four years ago with my family. In Ethiopia we spent many years waiting to come to Israel. Meanwhile we lived in transit camps. In Israel my parents don’t know how to support our family and I went to Neve Michael. I live in a group with other girls my age.

My name is Lital Nir. I am 12 years old. I celebrated my bat-mitzvah at Neve Michael last year. I live in Perach’s group with 10 other girls my age. My mother married very young and my father has not been living with us for many years. She tries to care for me and my two brothers on her own, but she is often ill and cannot cope. Thus we came to live at Neve Michael.

Neta is 12 years old and her brother Or is 10. Their parents’ stormy marriage ended in divorce last year. Neither of their parents could take care of them, so the social services delivered them to Neve Michael. Now Neta and Or are settled into a family unit with their counselors.

Alon, 9, and his brothers and sisters are recent arrivals at Neve Michael. Alon’s mother is mentally incompetent. His constantly fighting parents were divorced last year, at which point the social services determined that neither of the parents were capable of taking care of the children.

My name is Haniel Cohen. My parents live in Beersheva. They are unable to care for me on a permanent basis, so the social services decided that I would live at Neve Michael. I suffer from Tourette’s Syndrome, which makes it difficult for me to form social contact with my peers, but I never give up. I am 12 years old and I will be celebrating my bar-mitzvah at Neve Michael this coming year.

Sponsor: Olga Simon Auckland
My name is Iris Yaakobov. I am 13 years old. When I was a baby, my mother died. I was raised by my aunts and grandmother. I have been living at Neve Michael for many years, together with my two older sisters. Last year our father died too. We were orphaned and now Neve Michael is our only home. We support each other as much as possible.

Sponsors' feedback, with UIA response
Email received 4 December 2005 by UIA Auckland

Sponsor: We looked through the website and think it is fantastic to be able to support children in Israel . The information and pictures of the children were very touching and I found it really difficult to "select" a child to sponsor. Almost painful to select a life. However we both wish to offer our support through child sponsorship separately - so we can support two children.

I just wish to ask a couple of questions - the site mentions 7 children. Will that change in the future as more children need sponsors? I am not sure how you determine which child will be offered an opportunity for a sponsor etc.

UIA Auckland : The children listed are the first to be selected for sponsorship. As sponsors are found for these children they will be replaced by others from the 250 currently residing at Neve Michael.

Sponsor: I understand that the sponsorship will be a commitment till the child turns 18? What if the sponsor cannot in the future support the child financially?
UIA Auckland : Sponsorship is only a commitment for 12 months and can be continued as an option of the sponsor.

Sponsor: Also, if we travel to Israel , will we be allowed to meet with the children and visit Neve Michael?
UIA Auckland : Neve Michael always welcomes and enjoys visits from overseas visitors. Many of our UIA contributors have returned from the home with praise and respect for the manner in which the children are taken care of.

Sponsor: I think the start on the website is fantastic. Personally I would have liked to read a few words from the children themselves as well. Maybe in the future they can write something or draw something for the site. Are the children aware that you look for sponsors for them and that part of their history is told on line?
UIA Auckland : Thank you. The website was launched on 14 December 2005 and many of these details you refer to will be added over the next few months. It is the intention of Neve Michael to ensure their children have a link with the sponsors, in an effort to replace their family ties.
