Auckland-based photographer Marijke de Jong was
part of New Zealand s first Birthright Program experience
to Israel in 2001. During the intensive 10-day introduction to Israel
s culture and history, she visited the northern town of Safed
, the birthplace of Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah.
Safed was a place I felt immediately connected
to, Marijke says. It had a beauty and an honest charm
that sung of peace and humanity.
A triptych of Marijkes photographs from Safed,
are now available in an artist book. They are for sale for $30 each,
with a third of all proceeds going to Neve Michael.
The book will be perfect for a coffee table,
as a gift or to hang on the wall, suggests Marijke, In
the present climate I hope these photos represent the struggle for
peace like the illuminated Menorah that can be seen but not yet
touched.
